Paterson was a key player in the Sydney music scene of the 1960s and a pioneer of post bop / free jazz along with the likes of Bernie McGann, John Pochee, Dave Levy, Bobby Gebert, Joe Lane, Dave McRae and John Sangster… Back in NZ in the 1970s, he was a member of the award-winning jazz-fusion group Dr Tree, and later, Space Case.
